It's Indigenous People's Day, when everyone declares their support for the native peoples whose stolen land they live on. And then most do nothing for them for the rest of the year. I live on land stolen from the Ohlone by the Spanish, it then became part of Mexico and then then was stolen from the Mexicans by Americans.
Maybe we should pay some rent on the stolen land to the tribes or descendants of the tribes it was stolen from. A small property tax (say 0.1-0.25%) would allow them to get back some of what was lost over time, or at least give the poorest tribes who were moved to the worst land the ability to afford electricity, food, water, and and medical care.
I know nothing like that will happen. Support is easy when it doesn't come with a price tag.
