This is what woke us up at 2:30 am in Eureka. Glad we’re in Oregon now.
My thoughts are with you, NoCal. 💔
At least 2 people died and thousands are without power following the 6.4 magnitude #earthquake in Northern #California.

regarding the likelihood that #salmon and #steelhead historically ascended the Skagit River above the area the city of Seattle built its dams beginning in 1919, contrary to the city's claims, with implications for fish passage. The city's dams are in the heart of the #UpperSkagitIndianTribe 's usual and accustomed area.

Which makes a debt limit catastrophe in early 2023 even more likely, imho

The fringe GOP is losing their minds about a bipartisan omnibus deal that would fund the government, pass the electoral count act, and secure funding for Ukraine.
To be clear, they’re actually mad that they won’t be able to hold the government hostage in 2023.
Trump has been accused of multiple copyright violations for his ludicrous NFT collection. He can’t even do shoddy artwork without duffing it up
Self Promo on Fedi, a Writer's Take
i meant to wait to do this until I was feeling better, but I'm actually feeling worse and the only thing I can do is spit out stream of conscious takes.
So I might as well.
I'm seeing a lot of posts about self promo, creatives being driven off by lack of self promo, etc.
Haven't seen anyone talk about ways to make self-promo work.
The rest will be unlisted and under a CW. Please boost.
The stochastic nature of interconnection in contemporary 'globalised' 'culture' means there is no Good way to do things, only a commitment to continuous striving to do things less badly. As a starting point, rather than basing action on the assumption that you are correct, begin by assuming you are incorrect and reevaluate.
It's December 19th, and that means it's time for the ceremonial posting of the #trekmastree picture.
This year's acquisitions include #Sulu, #SevenOfNine, and a #BorgCube. #trekmas
Guess I’ll never know what computer I am using! 🙃
(Yes, Mac OS 8.1 on a Mac IIci is very much unsupported!) #retrocomputing
The NY Times' excellent reporting on a soon-to-be Trumpist member of Congress (from Long Island) whose background claims seem almost entirely phony raises a fairly obvious question: Why didn't the Times bother to check this stuff BEFORE the election?
It should be standard for news orgs to check out local candidates' claims, and do it in a timely way.
#birdsite wrapped you in a cocoon.
I'm seeing lots of comments and complaints about the differences between Mastodon and Twitter. Most seem to be of the form "Why am I getting these replies to my posts? I never got these on Twitter.
I hate these!"
Of course, I'm not replying to those posts, because 99.9% of the posters don't really want an answer. They want to know that people to share their discomfort.
For the 0.1% who do want an answer, here it is. Twitter didn't hide those posters from you. Twitter hid you from the people who would make those posts.
That's right. Twitter did it's best to make sure that the only people who saw your posts were people who would like your posts. It wrapped you up tightly, made sure you were comfortable, and made sure you wouldn't cause anyone else discomfort. Or effect change, for that matter.
OK, butterflies. You're out of your cocoons now. The people who never saw you before can't help but notice you. They might not get your jokes. And you might hear back from them. It's not so much demographics as lack of a cocoon.
According to the Jan. 6 committee's report, when people passed through the metal detectors to see Trump speak, security confiscated 269 knives/blades; 242 cannisters of pepper spray; 30 blunt instruments; 18 brass knuckles; 18 tasers; along with body armor and gas masks.
Republicans have called Jan. 6th "legitimate protest."

Funny how 10 people on Elon's 'stepping down vote tweet' reply with: "I voted first" and posting a screenshot.
This demonstrates again how broken the poll system is on #Twitter.
#introduction and my first toot.
I'm scientist working hard to reveal the secrets of #Arctic ecosystems.
I do love mountains, #tundra, #snow and arctic-alpine plants. So my contribution here would likely to be mostly about the #science on these topics and overall #nature positive good vibes. Probably some #rstats as well.
I'm a #fieldwork addict so expect many nice photos.
Got frustrated with the current #Twitter and now learning here. Looks good so far!
In 1933, there were 500,000 Jewish people in Germany, of a total population of 67 M. That's a bit less than 0.75 percent.
Today there are an estimated 1.6 M adults in the US that identify as transgender: about 0.5 percent of US adults.
It doesn't take a large group to serve as targets for fascist hatred and violence.
A small minority can play that role just fine.

My read of J6C Report intro
Note that the J6C Report begins where only a handful of reporters have gone: with the words of the actual rioters. You need that to prove incitement but TV lawyers said it was all a waste of time.
