Why does mid-February northern Wisconsin look like early-November northern Wisconsin?

Riddler and Eva say "Get some rest, and don't let the incomprehensible actions of humans bother you."

First ripe lime fell off the tree yesterday. You know what that means!

The Joker steadfastly refuses to acknowledge the existence of house primates.

An Anna's Hummingbird lands, wings outstretched, on a maroon and yellow daylily.

It's Indigenous People's Day, when everyone declares their support for the native peoples whose stolen land they live on. And then most do nothing for them for the rest of the year. I live on land stolen from the Ohlone by the Spanish, it then became part of Mexico and then then was stolen from the Mexicans by Americans.

Maybe we should pay some rent on the stolen land to the tribes or descendants of the tribes it was stolen from. A small property tax (say 0.1-0.25%) would allow them to get back some of what was lost over time, or at least give the poorest tribes who were moved to the worst land the ability to afford electricity, food, water, and and medical care.

I know nothing like that will happen. Support is easy when it doesn't come with a price tag.

Opened up a 1954 copy of "Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Guide to Etiquette" to find this.

I guess everyone needs a day job.

We've had a new visitor to the back yard recently. At first we though this might be the Penguin, a cat we had for a while 7 years ago. However, looking at photos, we saw the markings didn't match. So we named this cat "not-Penguin" because we are so clever with our cat names and "bizarro-Penguin" was too many syllables. It appears to be well fed and healthy, so we assume it has a home nearby.

At the age of 7, the Riddler has decided that, maybe, laps are OK.

We've been getting a lot of band-tailed pigeons at the feeders. For people who haven't experienced them, they are huge, just a bit smaller than a crow, with a wingspan about twice that of a rock dove (i.e. city pigeon). And they travel in flocks.

Here's a flock taking off from the back yard. I think I count 33 in that photo.

A Manhattan with a scant bar spoon of ginger bitters is nice on a rainy night.
