I don't think journalists (in general) -- and certainly not the organizations they work for -- fully understand the threat Musk represents to the future of free expression and journalism itself.

Begging him to reinstate the banned accounts is pure folly. It is bended-knee supplication to a sociopath who now controls a powerful media company. But the power of his company depends in no small degree on keeping journalists there.

You know what other famous person's plane is also publicly trackable via it's ADS-B transponder and is relentlessly followed around by photographers, press, and regular people who want to yell at him? Air Force One.

I’m sad some reporters are distancing themselves from flight tracking or ElonJet. Jack Sweeney might not consider himself a journalist, but his work in building ElonJet and many other flight-tracking accounts is in many ways a journalistic endeavor. The journalism community should strongly defend him and his work.

Elon Musk accusing everyone who's posting about the @elonjet account of "doxing" him reminds me of when Glenn Greenwald accused me of doxing "ordinary Americans" because I wrote an article based on data leaked from Gab. https://theintercept.com/2021/03/15/gab-hack-donald-trump-parler-extremists/

I _actually_ got doxed because of that reporting. My wife and I left our home for a few days because neo-nazis on Gab were sharing our home address and photos of our front door (full of antisemitic, homophobic, and transphobic slurs and threats), and we also got incessant threats over SMS and voicemail and both had to change phone numbers as a result

Journalists, I am begging you:

Organize.

Tap your networks, figure out what collective action you are going to take against Musk, and then do it.

He may not realize it, but his platform lives & dies by your participation.

You may be under attack, but you have the cards.

They are now calling for all ministries on the server to put their focus on Mastodon

The site I write for, like almost every news site from the NYT on down includes a twitter button for sharing.

(Note: I used a silly example, but this bill is really deeply problematic in ways beyond it. It would chill, if not outright forbid, public oversight and discussion of the judiciary generally, and be the camel's nose for many more unconstitutional incursions on speech.)
