I've spent ALOT of time screwing around with VPNs over the years and all roads lead back to Proton for me. It's not the cheapest, it may not even be the fastest, but the Proton crew has my trust which is really what it's all about.
I suspect you find that the free tier, and even the basic tier, have heavily congested VPN servers so you may not get the best experience. But glad you're giving it a try anyhow.
I'm all-in on Proton and get a bit of a discount for bundling email and VPN. It makes email _almost_ free.
@jonw That is a ringing and significant endorsement - Thank you.
Glad I saw your image and got curious about ProtonVPN. Installed the software cleanly, now connected.
Impressive to see how clean it is, and a binary of 11 MB. 👍
They give you a Premium service try out for 7 days, I said no thank you, but it still shows there.
The Free service is not time limited, but will allow only 3 servers for the user to select and connect to.
I saw their server stats, and the Icelandic one had a very low load - plus it's not in North America, or too far away from me.
After this week, I probably couldn't pick it like I did.
The speed test came out very well. I will need to repeat in the morning when cable load is lower, now it's peak time here and speeds normally drop. Nominal for my connection is 40 down, 10 Mb/s up. Upload was spot on.
@jonw
@Sphinx
Screenshot of current server loads, this is just part of the list.
There are some with lower loads atm.
@yojimbo, there's no need to delate the account - they do offer the service for free, unlimited time. Just restricted to 3 servers only. Fair enough, gives you protection on public wifi at a minimum.
I have used different companies in the past, but never for free, always bought one year service contract.
The speed wil llikely drop when I only have three servers to chose from, but I am impressed by how nice the software is, and how easy it is to install.
Plus, FREE. 👍
