As an atheist, I’m pretty fed up with the fact that our local city and county council meetings start out with a “non-denominational” invocation (never mind Jesus is invoked on occasion).

In general, I find public display of religious affection embarrassing and completely out of line. I tolerate it, but it makes me want to puke. It has absolutely no place in a secular, public policy setting. It’s also clear to me that it is not an innocent attempt to bring religion to a meeting but an attempt to push a clearly political point of view. A “lifestyle choice” if you will.

It’s a difficult step for me personally, but I would love to see citizens come forward during public comment at these meetings to politely push back and request to eliminate these invocations because they are clearly political and an incredible waste of time and public money.

That’s my suggestion as one place to start.
