New legislation in #France: all existing carparks with 80 or more spaces must install a #solar roof within 3 to 5 years.

This could generate up to 11 gigawatts of #SolarPower.

#Renewables #RenewableEnergy #ClimateCrisis.

UK Politics and Public Funding

Rather too much of this sort of thing going on for my liking. Opera isn't ever going to be a cause that easily tugs at the heart strings, but plenty in the public sector will recognise the demand to do the government's job in resolving structural social issues.

I'm all for moving things out of London, but it's not clear to me how the ENO being in one big city rather than another changes anything. "Let them eat Carmen"?

Still, I look forward to the not-at-all-hypocritical outrage when someone next suggests moving Parliament, even as a temporary measure for renovations.

@ottocrat @davidallengreen Yes, commentary within a character limit. And very often context for a joke that might otherwise be somewhat obscure.

But there's no denying that QTs are responsible for a lot of whipped up conflict. One of the very first rules I adopted at the Birdsite was that anyone QTing me instead of replying wasn't likely interested in an exchange of ideas. I feel their absence, but it would be an exaggeration to say I mourn it.

@andrewholding He certainly would have found that to be a cheaper option.

Probably enjoyed discovering this exchange from 2020 too much.

He clearly took a different path.

@nickwillow69 I think it is, and it's great to see the enthusiasm, which bodes well for the long term. But perception matters. With servers creaking under the strain and refugees still pouring in (protect our borders, etc), we do need to remember that this nice new place is actually someone else's house.

Just asking people to be aware. The more care we take now, the smoother the transition will be.

Lotta talk about replacing Twitter.

The better dialogue is how to get people to re-evaluate how they engage with the internet.

Personally, I'm convinced of two things:

- You can't 1:1 replace Twitter unless it's a similar top-down walled garden.

- Most people probably shouldn't want a Twitter replacement, since Twitter is bad for us.

Instead of finding/molding/creating a replacement, we should encourage people (and ourselves!) to focus on what they like most about internet interaction.

I'm seeing comments from the crowd saying "isn't it exciting being here at the start?"

Guys, please remember has been here and in use for years, not just sitting empty, waiting for you to discover it.

Every major digital migration I've seen has had moments of tension as different approaches and cultures collide. So it would be a good start if we all took extra care not to sound like colonisers disregarding the existence of the natives who've been here forever.

Like this

@capnthommo It hasn't. When you press the button, you should get a header "Content warning" above your text. You can overwrite that with your heading, and the text to be hidden goes below.

Williamson resignation letter - quick close reading

@davidallengreen I find it curious that a "friend of Williamson" committed the very same error just four days ago.

It's almost as if these "friends" are routinely made up for convenient supportive briefings. :ablobflushed:

@capnthommo When you start to type, you should have a little exclamation mark in a speech bubble. It's that. This is what mine looks like, but apps may vary.

UK Politics

Amid all the comment about 's resignation, which I can't really add to, this little detail jumped out at me.

Williamson's erroneous use of "refute" to indicate that he disputes the characterisation of his behaviour is not only a crime against the English language, but also strangely similar to the words of a "friend of Williamson" four days ago.

Not often you get such strong evidence that "friend of X" can typically be taken to just mean X.

@t0nyyates I hear that, and largely agree.

Based on some long-forgotten memories of past mass migrations going way back to early bulletin boards, I'm expecting a certain amount of friction before everything settles down. Newcomers charging in head first, oldtimers caught between enthusiasm for sudden expansion and resentment of the new kids, and so on.

Let's hope we can all get along fairly smoothly.

@ClaireJHartnell @DavidHenig
Well, it's something he did on the Bird Site, so obviously it's got more attention there. If you don't go there, you might not even know about it.

Added to this, there's the native ability there to share it directly, which helps to fuel rapid, angry reaction. And this place is deliberately far less about rapid anger.

But the only substantial exchange I've had here so far was on exactly that topic, and very scathing towards Musk.

I don't think it's fair to expect a small platform to have the same energy, especially when Twitter refugees are still tentatively building connections. Give it time.

Okay this might be a long post :blob_grinning_sweat:

One thing that I realised is making harder for people to switch is because the whole concept can feel daunting & overwhelming for non-tech savvy people.

With Twitter to them it was straight forward and easy to find topics they enjoy but with mastodon its a bit different.
So if you're new to mastodon or you want to introduce someone to mastodon here are some tips, useful sites & tools:
### Tips:
- Choosing a home instance isn't as importance as it seems, don't overthink it. Yes moderation rules & policies may differ but they all have one thing in common: Be a decent human. You **always** have the option to migrate your account to a new instance.
- Toots (or posts if you think toots are cringe :sad_cat:) are what we call micro-blogging instead of tweets
- You’re supposed to "boost" AKA "reblog" toots that you like.Since Mastodon does not have an algorithm that surfaces toots that have been liked a lot, boosting is the best way to help spread stuff that you like, and to show appreciation. (credit to @orsvarn for this comment)
- Another way to fill your timeline with content you enjoy is to: Find other people with similar interests, follow them, favourite their posts, boost their posts, use hashtags. rinse, repeat. (credit to @garry)
- If you ever feel yourself getting sucked into arguments on the , you might want to take advantage of the instance mute/block feature!
Instances tend to foster a culture, so if you find people from a specific site tend to be bothering you, muting/blocking that instance will keep other members of that community from bothering you as well.
- Finally do not share private/sensitive information via DMs on Mastodon. Direct Messages are not E2E. **Keep it in mind**

Lastly if you are interested in setting up your own instance you can learn via learnfoss.org/ its completely free and its made by the wonderful @stux

I apologize for the long post lol, just hope this helps anyones transition over :ablobsmilehappy:

@DavidHenig I wouldn't expect it to happen immediately. A lot of people finding their way around and finding each other again. What I've seen so far is promising, though.

@ratul @ScarlettThunder Thanks, that's helpful. Expect it will be quite bumpy at first, but I remember how weird The Other Place was until I got used to it.

@gpowerf Also goes against his own stated position. But why would we expect anything else?

And if he got his wish for a R-leaning Congress, why do I get the feeling he wouldn't apply the same reasoning to promote a D President in 2024?
