We're coming in to Yom Kippur here in Israel- and even in Tel Aviv, the bastion of secularism shuts down. The whole city shuts down- it's a little crazy, to be honest.
Major cities shut down because of a holiday. I'm not into the holiday part of it, but I love the cultural aspect of it.
@commandelicious When I say the city and country shut down, I mean that people go and play football on the highway. That's how shutdown the country is.
@Surasanji
So basically christmas but less cold :P
@commandelicious Less trees and less food, too. :P
@Surasanji
Why even have a Christmas without all the food! 😫
@commandelicious
@Surasanji Are you Jewish? My city shuts down on Sundays. Restaurants will open late because alcohol can’t be served before 11:00. Liquor stores are closed because liquor and wine cannot be sold.
@RolandDeschaine Yes. I am Jewish.
@Surasanji So am I. I will break the fast with family, but I cannot fast because of medical reasons.
@RolandDeschaine I'm not religious, however, when I was I didn't fast for the same reasons. I take medications that don't really do well without food involved.
It would be dishonest, however, to say that I do not fast because of the meds these days, since even if I didn't take them I would not fast these days. ;p
@Surasanji
Germany is just shut down every sunday for the very same reason. Well and easter and such.
