The European Court of Justice's recognition that Russia occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions in May 2014 is an important decision for Ukraine. This decision means that Russia can no longer deny its presence in the region, and that courts in other countries may consider claims against Russia for human rights violations in the occupied territories. Additionally, the decision can be used by companies whose property was appropriated by the occupiers.
