At 7 months old, the doctors at Okhmatdyt saved a baby boy from Zhytomyr region who had a split esophagus. He was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit and underwent an operation to separate the upper part of the esophagus from the airways. After a month of rehabilitation, he was hospitalized again and underwent several surgeries to restore the patency of his own esophagus. The doctors also discovered a defect in the child's great vessels and performed a minimally invasive surgery to expand the areas of narrowing. After 6 months of intensive treatment, the doctors were able to recreate the child's own esophagus and he was able to eat for the first time. The boy is now going home to his 8 siblings. The Okhmatdyt doctors are proud of their success in saving the child's life.
