“Ukraine’s membership will put an end to the ‘sleepy siesta’ in EU enlargement” - Borrell
In an interview with The Guardian, EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell spoke about the prospects for Ukraine's membership in the European Union.
In his opinion, Ukraine’s path to the EU will not be easy, since it is in a state of war and must still carry out many reforms. In addition, at the moment, Ukraine, as a member of the EU, would be the only country that is a net beneficiary.
At the same time, according to the diplomat, Ukraine’s membership will mean the end of the “sleepy siesta” regarding EU expansion.
“For many years there was a kind of impasse and nothing happened. Ukraine has created a new dynamic,” he noted.
Borrell also predicted that the war in Ukraine and its eventual outcome would be one of the three driving forces behind the creation of a new world order, along with competition between China and the US and the rise of the global South
