To this day, the United States official policy, in the event of a potential incoming nuclear attack, is, that once it is confirmed, the ICBM force will be launched before it can be destroyed. This is the policy known as Launch on Warning.
Both President G W Bush and President  Barack Obama campaigned to end the policy, calling it a ‘dangerous vestige of the Cold War’. Neither of them changed the policy. Nor did Donald Trump and nor did President Biden. It remains active even as you sit reading this.
Known as the ‘hair trigger response’, a confirmed incoming attack will illicit a full counter strike.
Sleep well…it is the price of deterrence.
