NATO countries can help Ukraine protect part of its western territory from attacks by Russian drones with the help of air defense systems (APD) located on the eastern borders of the Alliance, in particular in Poland or Romania. Such a development is not ruled out by representatives of a number of German political parties, including the ruling Free Democratic Party (VDP) and the "Union * 90"/Greens," writes FAZ newspaper on Saturday, May 11.

According to the publication, the idea to shoot down Russian drones over Western Ukraine using NATO air defense systems deployed in Romania and Poland and operated by NATO military personnel belongs to the expert of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) Nico Lange, as well as the former assistant to the NATO Secretary General , Lieutenant General Horst-Heinrich Brauß (Horst-Heinrich Brauß). According to Lange, this would make it possible to create a safe zone up to 70 kilometers wide on the Ukrainian border. And this, in turn, would help relieve Ukrainian air defense forces in other areas of the front.

According to FAZ journalists, such an approach would be a step in the same direction as considered by French President Emmanuel Macron, who did not rule out sending French troops to help Kyiv: "Western forces would directly repel Russian attacks, but not from the territory of Ukraine."
