Russia will hold military exercises near the United States - in the Caribbean Sea

Russian warships and aircraft are due to arrive in the Caribbean in the coming weeks for exercises, and the U.S. is monitoring them. According to US officials, this is how Moscow, against the backdrop of escalation in relations with the West, is trying to demonstrate that it is still a major military power, AP reports.

Naval exercises in the Caribbean will take place after russia lost about a third of the Black Seabed Fleet. Ukraine, which has no navy at all, was able to sink and damage at least 26 ships and submarines with missiles and naval drones, according to Oryx.

According to US officials the planned exercises are "certainly part of Russia's response to the growing support for Ukraine from the United States" but it also is "an effort by Putin to show his navy is still capable of global power projection after losing ships to Ukrainian strikes."

Senior officials in the Joe Biden administration called the arrival of the russian ships a notable, but not worrying event. According to two of them, the exercises, which will be monitored by the United States, will involve a "small group" of military and auxiliary vessels.

Russia did not notify the United States about the exercises, although countries usually do this so as not to provoke misunderstandings and complications. Still, U.S. officials say the military of any country has the right to conduct exercises in international waters. Previously, russia has already done this several times in the Caribbean.
