There is no reason to doubt the effectiveness of cleaner indoor air in reducing the transmission of communicable diseases like SARS-CoV-2.
There is reason, however, to doubt the cost-effectiveness if no consideration is given to quantifying the amount of delivered clean air or its cost.
Recommended clean air delivery targets exist, as do standards for measuring clean air delivery.

Use the standards & price transparency to deliver the targets at lowest possible cost.

@cleanairstars Of the recommended portable air cleaners, do any allow for reputable off-brand filters? Isn't the device's HEPA rating determined by the entire device assembly? I'm cynically reminded of printers and (lifetime) ink cost in this regard and curious how manufacturer lock-in affects long-term cost comparisons at scale, (such as a school with multiple units per classroom).

@WilliamRamsey They probably don’t recommend them, but where they are available and can be independently tested for efficacy (same fit, pressure drop,
filter media surface area, and similar filtration efficiency) then there’s no reason why they won’t work as well.

@WilliamRamsey Here is one example of a 3rd party filter that has a slightly different flow rate due to a higher density carbon filter (which when removed would give a slightly higher CADR than the original filter) x.com/CleanAirStars/status/162
