Yesterday I mentioned to the fam that, after much procrastination, I finally managed to get the client certificates renewed for the VPN I use to access our home LAN.
My MiL piped up:
> "You know that McCafee will set up one of those for you for free right?"
So, I told her that I was aware of several options for setting up VPN's.
> "Then why did you wait so long and go through all of the trouble? It's not even that hard to do!"
> heh Well, I don't trust those guys I guess. Also I'm not using this VPN for it's privacy/security benefits.
So, anyway. Now, I'm in trouble for talking down to my MiL about VPNs.

If she thinks you're dumb as a brick, she might not break out her cotton-sharp wits...

She's in a really delicate place right now emotionally. It seems like any chance at self-validation is something she will jump on. She's been struggling with good self-image for a long long time. It is cause for much of our afflictions. But, we still love her.

lol, you don't need to worry about your taste in humor.
I just try to stay wary about how I talk about her. I have a lot of negative feelings, but, if I voice them too often, then it starts to alter my perceptions. I honestly wanted to take the joke further but decided not to.

I think this is a very good way to deal with such a situation. By keeping the balance like that, it'll surely be easier to reach your goal without leaving anyone in the dust, including yourself.

Time will tell if anyone gets left in the dust I guess! My primary goal is to ensure none of her antics end up traumatizing my kiddo.
