To put it overly simply, left-wing ideas promote collective equity (rise or fall together) while right-wing ideas promote individual freedom (to succeed or fail). It is possible to be one type on social issues but the other type on economic issues.
I am right-leaning socially, left-learning economically, for example.

@Hyolobrika @thatbrickster The collective thing doesn't work well if you take hard stances of shutting others out, so being against immigration can't be an honest leftist stance.
