The notion that people choose to use computer applications because they are useful at accomplishing tasks is extremely outdated. The vast majority of software use is not voluntary.

@chris__martin That, and more. As someone who does not use a smartphone, i can attest that hardware (smartphone) use becomes more and more mandatory aka non-voluntary too.

I forego some things in favour of keeping myself free from smartphones, but i reckon i will not be able to keep that up indefinitely. And i think the hardware, with its implications, does make a difference to software use in general.
