There are many perfectly good reasons for piracy that everyone always talks about, such as for financial or archival reasons.

But everyone always forgets the single most important reason: Embarrassment.

Paying money leaves _far_ too much of a trail for people to find, and laugh at you.

Piracy, meanwhile, the only way someone could possibly know what you've been watching is if they clicked the secret folder marked "definitely_not_girlie_movies_"

@OpenComputeDesign LOL. But anyway, I doubt your bank or payment processor cares about what kind of movies you watch. And this exists: iknowwhatyoudownload.com/ , which is much easier for an ordinary user to spy on you with than somehow getting your financial history.
The only way to be truly private is with I2P torrents :P

@light @OpenComputeDesign I think embarrasment is generally a problem, if maybe not realistic versus private entities.

States are a whole different threat model, fascists commonly just take such information and are a more serious threat. One cannot feel safe because it is unclear if watching something seen as feminine would be chosen as a marker for an outgroup.

@admitsWrongIfProven @light I suppose my main issue is I will only spend money on physical copies of things (except games, because physical copies don't exist anymore) and also I don't know how to use my debit card, and need to ask someone every time.
