If something is self-evident, would that not imply that it is visible to at least most people? If people are rich or poor from birth, are they actually created equal?
I'm thinking about that swastica-spangled banner (did you see?) hanging in that one dudes office... what about that and a big "NO" over it?
@admitsWrongIfProven rich and poor come after birth, after creation. the infant of rich or poor is equally helpless and in need of care. if you want to challenge the claim, genetic difference is the usual approach, because obviously it exists at “creation”, but then the question becomes in what sense do we mean “equal”. i say we mean it in an ethical sense, regardless of any characteristics genetics might affect.
@interfluidity Yeah, i was alluding to the problem of ethics not being on everyones mind, least of all on the mind of those steering society.
Since that goes on for quite a while, i was thinking that quoting land owners (that was the US founding story, correct?) might not be the most effective message for promoting ethical priorities.
