Modern #engineering is full of "things done right, despite the odds" stories: Taj Mahal, HMS Victory, Flying Scotsman, Model T, Golden Gate, Apollo, Boeing 747, Intel 4004, UNIX, VisiCalc—on and on and on.

Why, then, is modern #IT #software practice so very much unlike those success stories?🤷‍♂️

@AmenZwa Just guessing here but I would imagine all of those have a level of complexity that can be contained within one mind. Not every detail of course but the
“bones” of each design was within that limit.

Yes, indeed! Great observation.

The 747 was one of the most complex engineering projects, which was preceded by Apollo, a project that was a few orders of magnitude more complex. Joe Sutter was "the father" of the 747, and Wernher von Braun of the Apollo. But even such engineering giants could not have held every minutiae of projects at those scales.

The power of abstract thinking, yeah?
