Update. We now have a PeerTube instance up free to all QOTO users to use. The new server can be found here: video.qoto.org

This server is in addition to several other servers we brought up in recent weeks, all are open to users of QOTO:

NextCloud: cloud.qoto.org

Gitlab (allows to host private domains as well as several free CI runners): git.qoto.org

Discourse: discourse.qoto.org

And of course there is QOTO mastodon at qoto.org

Later next week we will probably get FunkWhale server up and PixelFed. We will continue to be a home for Federated and Distributed social technologies that enable STEM projects to collaborate and publish their results.

Accessing abortion may become easier than accessing contraception

By David Mullins If proposals contained in a submission to the Department of Health by the Irish Pharmacy Union are accepted; then access to an abortion will soon become more readily available than access to contraception. As things currently stand, any person aged 16 or over may access an abortion without parental consent. Those below […] ionainstitute.ie/accessing-abo

update:

We recently added a new service to the QOTO family of services. We now host a Discourse server are discourse.qoto.org

It is currently empty but will act as a space for discussion around open-source STEM projects or general STEM discussion. It will also act as a mailing list for any project managers who wish to use the service for their projects.

IT compliments our other services well including a GitLab instance open to the general public for open-source STEM projects as well as for our users to host private or personal websites.

We also have a NextCloud server open to the public for open-source STEM projects and individuals to utilize as well.

In the next few weeks we will continue to bring up new services including PeerTube, Pixelfed, FunkWhale, and many more on their way.

The abortion movement and its root in eugenics

In a recent decision on the abortion law of two US states, Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas, wrote an opinion of his own that drew attention to the embrace of eugenics by some of the founders of the modern ‘reproductive health’ movement. As he says: “From the beginning, birth control and abortion were promoted as means […] ionainstitute.ie/the-abortion-

Thanks for hosting @freemo.

I'm going to use this account for keeping track of my learning, to complement the theme of qoto.org. Hopefully with that usage it might even be my Mastodon main.

Gonna start my first post with this article I came across on Quora, despite my slight distaste of the monetisation the platform has tread towards:

medium.com/better-marketing/ho

The article is suggesting the use of handwriting a particular lesson 100 times, before experimenting and learning from it.

I was born and raised in Hong Kong until 15. The way we learn Chinese (a language evolved from pictures, so instead of memorising 26 alphabets that you string together, you memorise >1k different shapes) was largely rote learning - recite a chapter until you can do it from memory, handwrite a chapter 100 times. If you were naughty at school, handwrite a chapter 100 times more.

Sounds daunting and ineffective in Western standards, and I didn't like it, but it did have its merit. Even more so if you care about what you are learning.

The article used copywriting as an example of the learning subject. Since I'm learning programming, I wonder how I'm gonna do this - handwrite code 100 times? Handwrite explanation of algorithms 100 times? I do love handwriting so any excuse to get my pen flowing is a good excuse.

If you haven't checked out yet you should probably check out qoto.org and get an account. We have thousands of people on the local server most with extensive STEM backgrounds. It's an active server. But best part is that its not only distributed and decentralized but we also offer a ton of other distributed and compatible services.

Some of the other services we offer for free:

- Host your own website on your own domain with us for free.

- Get a free unlimited GitLab account to host any files or source code you want to share.

- Get a free NextCloud account, also hosted on QOTO. Its like google drive just with actual privacy.

- Many other features coming up this week including: A discourse server to host discussions, Photo hosting, Video hosting, and music hosting. All for free, and all using decentralized and federated technologies.

update, we now offer free web-hosting as part of the QOTO network of services. You dont even need to be a member of our MAstodon server (where I am making this post) to use it!

Our Gitlab instance is free for everyone to use for public and open-source projects. We recently enabled the Pages feature. This allows you to upload and host web sites directly from Gitlab. You can even bring your own custom domain, but if you dont have one you will be given a free URL to your page anyway.

As the first pilot test I moved my project over to the gitlab server. It is now hosting the following website: Aparapi.com

Please reach out to me if you'd like to use the service and have any questions.

Assault on the natural ties reaching its logical endpoint

The attack on the natural ties is getting closer to its logical endpoint now. The Children and Family Relationships Act, buttressed by the upcoming legislation on Assisted Human Reproduction already tremendously downgrade natural family ties, but influential voices want Irish law to go even further in this direction. For example, they want surrogate mothers to […] ionainstitute.ie/assault-on-th
