Lazyweb help wanted: NAS recommendations

Looking for recommendations for a new home . Our current one has reached EOL, so we’re looking for something up-to-date to replace it:

  • 4+ bays (with or without drives)
  • RAID (any scheme, just not JBOD)
  • Gigabit ethernet (x2 pref.)
  • SSH and web interface
  • ext4 (pref.)
  • 2GB+ RAM (expandable++!)
  • quiet & low-power standby
  • the faster the better, obvs!

Burned badly by in the past, so 👎

Any input much appreciated! TIA!

@nullifidian I use Synology for about a year. No problems so far.

@apinae Can you recommend a model? Looking at the DS920+ and DS420+, both seem like good options.

@nullifidian I have the DS420+ because it’s big enough for what I need at home. But if you need the extra space the DS420+ is the way to go of course. That being said, should you need it to handle more and bigger tasks then the DS920+ would be the better future-proof option (2 more CPU cores). The whole system from Synology and the DSM software platform are easy to use. And as far as I remember, the price difference between DS920+ and DS420+ was not that big. So to be on the safe side and if money is not too much ab issue, go with the DS920+

@apinae That’s helpful, thank you!
