As my first toot on Sciences.Social, I'm excited to share our lab's new PNAS paper--just out today--showing that wealth redistribution promotes happiness. This #MysteryExperiment began when a wealthy couple partnered with
TED to give away $2 million. 300 participants from 7 countries (Kenya, Indonesia, Brazil, Canada, US, UK, & Australia) joined the experiment without knowing what it was about. Then, 200 of them, chosen at random, received $10,000 each...pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2211

For academics it is going to be important to search for DOI's on this platform. This means we will need to be able to put a hashtag in front of a DOI. As identified by richvn@mastodon.social @mike and @rmounce this is currently not possible. Indicate your support for this new feature request on the Mastodon github page: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i and boost to reach a wider audience.

Anyone who can help run a mastodon instance for verified official accounts of scientific python projects? There is funding to pay for hosting so you don’t need to do much tech work, but gotta do everything else. Please boost!

@gretathunberg

I would hope that on here everyone who is interested in can start to really think about what we can do to help the environment etc.

If we can get away from corporate control we may have a better chance to succeed.

Say take an instance, put something like jupyterlite on it, and federates across instances. How'd that be?

@freemo what would you say?

If you're wondering/worrying about Mastodon's sustainability have a look at a recent paper I co-wrote on the sustainability of open source projects. We described 3 types of OS sustainability (resource-based, interactional & infrastructural), and Mastodon's recent massive surge would appear to tick all 3 boxes! tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10

Hi, this is Greta. You are welcome to follow me here, if you prefer planet earth to planet mars.

It's actually pretty amazing that a open source product developed by a tiny non-profit, running on a network of servers self-funded by volunteer administrator and moderators has managed to absorb some portion of one of the world's largest for-profit social networks.

It's a miracle the whole thing didn't collapse or catch fire.

Great job everyone.

This one is for all the new people on #Mastodon: did you know that the #fediverse has more than just a microblogging replacement? And that they can all interoperate with your Mastodon account?

First ever clinical trial underway of laboratory grown red blood cells being transfused into another person

If proved safe and effective, manufactured #blood #cells could in time revolutionize treatments for people with blood disorders such as sickle cell and rare blood types.

I've been on Mastodon since early last year, though not too active, and it's great to see the new influx and interest.

Thought I'd mention this essay from @mmasnick from 2019, which was one of the things that got me interested in the #fediverse. "Protocols not Platforms" is one of the best essays on #technology and #freespeech that I've ever read. It doesn't even mention #mastodon, but it groks the essence of the internet as it was and again could be.

Hey, so, we've hit 1,028,362 monthly active users across the network today. 1,124 new Mastodon servers since Oct 27, and 489,003 new users. That's pretty cool.
