Depends on context, and what you do. It takes like 3 years for a bamboo to become hard enough to build something, meanwhile it stays there using space. You have many tens of kilos of food you are not harvesting to keep 100m covered in bamboo for 3 years. After that, is difficult to get rid of it in my experience, takes a while and keeps popping out.
Bamboo also likes a lot of water, in very dry areas you'll have to use much water from the reservoir to grow it.
In some places, like most EU cities, you can find a lot of usable wood in the trash, and recycle it, which is easier and more environmentally friendly.
That's just some thoughts, bamboo of course can have it's place in a design and community owned place, but like everything, it depends IMO
