Disgusting & boring

So I've done my first soak of my disgusting baseball cap (which I bought from Carmel-by-the-Sea when we went to see Big Sur, so can't bring myself to throw away). Baking powder and vinegar in boiling water. What came out of it makes me wonder if I might not be human. It. Was. Grim. But to be fair it's a few years old, I've never washed it, and have done quite a bit of hiking and running in it. It's now in bath #2 - washing tab and boiling water. Going to let it sit for a couple of hours then rinse it off in cold water and let it dry. I am stupidly excited at the prospect of having my favourite hat back like new. Is this what normal people do?

I am surprised how much a cap becomes after washing it. I typically wear a RealTree cap and for the first couple of days after the fresh wash the color is off-putting.

Also bamboozled washing other outdoor equipment like backpacks and sleeping bags.
