@steph It never hurts ro hear about them, but to many it feels very daunting. Are you thinking of specific topics already? Are you looking for contributions?

I was thinking about putting together a list of resources for chemistry students who want to learn more about patent searching and setting up alerts, but I think most chemists already get at least a bit of exposure to patents… unlike the biologists. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #chemtoots #chemtwitter #chemiverse

Fourteen years ago today, Sheharbano (Sheri) Sangji died of her injuries sustained while running a reaction with tert-butyl lithium in the laboratory of Professor Patrick Harran at UCLA. RIP. #SheriSangji

@grimalkina @mapperwocky

I've been studying leadership since I decided to go from lab bench to manager (because I thought I could get more science done that way). I've learned that the management style with the most evidence to recommend it is people-centered and supportive. That gets it labeled "feminine" and undervalued, but it is also my own instinctive style and so now I'm out to master and promote it. If that helps me to be a better feminist/ally, so much the better. 😀

@kdnyhan I once shared an apartment with 2 friends for over a year. Once moved out, I still visited every once in a while. During one of those visits, I discovered a kitchen drawer within a pullout cabinet, that I had never seen before. That's where my friends stored the lesser-used gear, that I was always wondering why we did not have it...

I just realized that my juicer (which I've used for 8 years) has a movable spout, so that I can juice a grapefruit into my glass, pop the spout up, drink the juice in the glass, and come back to refill.
I also lived in my last apartment for 3 years before I realized that the inset bathroom mirror swung out for storage.
What discoveries await?

Third month on #mastodon and continue to love this place. I've met so many interesting people & my mental health is so much better than on #Twitter!
Here's how I made my experience on Mastodon great:
1) Follow people who engage, are kind & classy
2) Respond to people's posts. Don't just blast your content & ignore.
3) Block mercilessly. Don't bother engaging with trolls.
4) Follow happy hashtags like #catsofmastodon and #Bookstodon

What are good training courses for an academic librarians to learn to support systematic review and easier extent metaanalysis?

Boost this toot if you're planning on sticking around Mastodon whether or not it becomes more popular than the birdsite.

Wanna know what competitive whip-cracking looks and sounds like? Here you go! Every Jan 6th, on the town square of Schwyz, central , the annual "Priischlepfä" takes place.

“The apparent exodus is a shock to the academic system that some researchers didn’t see coming but that others say has been palpable for quite some time — and is a trend only set to continue. ‘The majority of senior academics still don’t understand how fast this is coming,’ says Daniel MacArthur, a population geneticist at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney, Australia.

“Early-career scientists are not missing a beat, however.”

Possibly the most annoying UI trend of the last few years is websites changing from

Facebook and Twitter are bad, yes. But in my opinion, the worst is LinkedIn. Here are some exhibits. And the thing is: All of these aren't nearly as bad as the avalanche of "humble brags".

@Canageek I also use foobar. Only caveat so far: just noticed this week it coesn't play midi files. TBH, I was too lazy to check if this could be fixed with a simple plugin.

What you see on this photo is not from the Empire Strikes Back.

No, it is German police protecting a coal mine excavator in #Lützerath - a village planned to be demolished by the energy company RWE to extract coal that is not even needed for the energy security of Germany.

If you’re outraged about Adobe sending your pictures off their servers (you should be), please know other vendors do this too. That horse has already bolted.

Eg Microsoft Edge automatically sends your key presses in Edge to MS - enabled by default winbuzzer.com/2022/09/19/micro

Microsoft Office 365 sends every photo and screenshot you add in Word, PowerPoint etc (including in emails) to Microsoft 365 Intelligent Services without prompt support.microsoft.com/en-us/of

For those interpreting this as me wanting to pontificate without being questioned: no. I want to be able to post a picture of a baby bird that delighted me without having at least one person tell me to stick to “serious” content, at least one other (who neither understands animal behavior nor how an 800mm telephoto works) accuse me of stressing them by taking the photo from a concealed location 30 yards away, and worst by far two or more others tell me in detail how they enjoy killing them.

#QT #Mastodon #HowTo

People wanting QTs for "good" reasons, so they can add a comment to what they're boosting, just haven't learned how we've been doing it here all along, without the need for a QT function.

How it works:
1) Reply to the post you want to QT with a comment, such as "Boosting so my followers can also respond to this!" My opinion is ..."

2) Boost your REPLY. Your followers will see it in their timeline. When they click on it they'll see the OP above your reply.

Done! 🙂
