🔴 **The Earliest Photo of the Man Who Discovered the First Dead Sea Scrolls?**
"_This 1953 photo shoot covers both the excavations at Qumran and the early work of sorting the fragments. I was surprised to see a photo of the “two shepherds” who are said to have been the first to find scrolls standing outside the entrance to Cave 1Q._"

Do you think there is any veracity to his claims?
@DrJRN @bibliolater @histodon @histodons obviously you knew your grandfather best but my default would be to truth.
Unless he was a bit of a showman, prone to exaggeration, I would be very surprised if he didn’t tell you the truth.
What we learn from the education system is what society thinks we need to know; what we learn from our parents and grandparents is who we really are and what makes us who we are. And unless we acknowledge and recognise their family stories, we lose a bit of ourselves
@bibliolater @histodon @histodons His ability to insert himself in history was astonishing. For example, he was a member of a Scottish unit that fought at the Battle of Al Alamein (he does have a photo of him in uniform, however). As a kid, I was fascinated by his stories. Now as a historian, I do take his tales with the proverbial grain of salt. But if they were true, they would certainly add a level of interest to the historical realities.
