It's harder than I thought it'd be to fully convey how self-destructive an idea it is to "deplatform nazis". I think this means it's the right problem to focus on. It also has what I think might be the essential character of a Dark Age: the confusion of the toxin with the antitoxin. Imagine getting burned as a witch for suggesting that a town kill its rats during the Black Plague; that's the level we're at today. The only solution for the effects of the toxin are more toxin, and anyone offering an effective cure for those effects is treated as a poisoner.

Here's one point about it: when the media or a political researcher see a man raving in the street, in a public square with a diversity of opinion, they can easily get a sense of how receptive people are to what he says and can, themselves, easily dismiss him as unimportant. But when the same man speaks in his secret club on the darknet to an audience of only ironic shitposters, it will feel now like a spring of open source intelligence that must be gathered and entered into spreadsheets and make into a graph.

Deplatforming Nazis is not even as bad as plucking out your own eyes so that you can no longer see the Nazis who will continue to exert influence that's now hidden to you. Deplatforming Nazis *also* results in new artificial eyes that will tell you that the man raving on the street is an agent of the Illuminati.

@apropos I've been saying this for ages dude. "Deplatforming" someone just means that this someone will go to a more obscure, more niche platform full of people with the exact same opinion as him. This results in the creation of an eco-chamber that will result in amplifying his/her opinion. In the free-speech world, everyone can say stupid shit, but more importantly, everyone can debunk and ridicule the stupid shit that is being said... something that is not done in a "niche" platforms in which said stupid shit will just be validated. Not to mention the fact that "deplatforming" bad thing and "sterilizing" digital spaces distorts the level of urgency of problems. If you find a dead body in the street, what is your first action? To hide the body so no one can see it or to warn your neighbors there is a murderer in the city?
