A special role for Anterior Cingulate Cortex, but not Orbitofrontal Cortex or Basolateral Amygdala, in choices involving information biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

Interesting! Parsing OFC AMY and ACC makes me break out in a cold sweat. And rats not mice. Respect. Any ideas about why there would be a sex difference #sabv?

And, assuming a reasonable degree of mapping between #rat ACC and #macaque ACC, I might have predicted more of a #learning effect (of cue value/info) a la Basile or Procyk…and also for timing (Rush worth). So this tells me I need to be thinking differently and more deeply about what ACC is doing. I’m curious if you have ideas about the essential computation that may account for apparent or superficial differences in studies noting learning-stage effects? e.g. social v caloric reward, time scale of evidence accumulation, complexity of “information” to be gathered? #neuroscience

@karihoffman @biorxivpreprint @markgbaxter @cogneurophys thanks kari! yes, we definitely have prior evidence for learning effects following ACC inhibition, similar to OFC. These two subregions in rat do v similar things, unlike in macaque. This is one of few experiments where we find little/no overlap in function!

@karihoffman @biorxivpreprint @markgbaxter @cogneurophys As for the ‘essential computation’... I think here ACC is keeping track of performance statistics of info choices on a trial-by-trial basis. Following ACC inhibition, rats don’t use previous choice to guide current choice. The timescale is short for ACC evidence, much longer than OFC.

@karihoffman @biorxivpreprint @markgbaxter @cogneurophys As for the sex difference, we add to growing evidence of sex-dependent, frontocortical modulation of learning and decision making.
