Everyone needs to understand that the biodiversity crisis isn’t just some vague academic concern for ecologists to flap about, it’s literally a threat to our continued existence. Eg: Indian vultures vanish, almost 100%, and it caused 500,000 human deaths. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c28e2p

@Philsturgeon i would love if greens would act in an ecological way but they choose to do things like putting wind turbines everywhere, including important bird habitats, to save 0.1% of global CO2 emissions.

@Philsturgeon
the wind turbine part contains some things i'd strongly disagree on, on other i agree.

wind turbines are not normal "buildings". birds do collide with windows, yes. they don't collide with lamp posts or broadcast towers. those structures don't move at high rotational speeds not found in nature.

people shooting random birds is a completely different thing. it's not a side effect but shit problem handling - just because other people mistreat their kids i don't have to and it doesn't make it ok if i do.

cats are a giant problem, that's why i deal with mice problems with traps instead of getting a cat.

i have no solid numbers for cars. i hit one pidgeon in 20 years of driving.

reinforcing concrete with turbine blades doubles the problem instead of solving it. concrete reinforced with steel is harmless, concrete mixed with epoxy is just increading the volume of problematic waste. i again don't care if this is already practiced with other waste. wind turbines are effective microplastic generators in their operative life and beyond.

@bonifartius you seem to be fighting studies and evidence with vibes; which I don’t get into.

- Where you put them.
- What color they are.
- Do they stop when/if birds come anywhere near them.
- Are the types of birds in those areas not smart enough to avoid them.

All of this has been studied and discussed by experts in their fields (including RSPB) so it’s not for us to litigate based on nothing.

these systems might exist. they might even work. they afaik aren't mandated here in germany, even if they are probably dirt cheap. the only thing shutting down turbines right now is "too much power generated". yet more turbines are build everywhere.

> - Are the types of birds in those areas not smart enough to avoid them.

if you put turbines everywhere, it's getting hard to "avoid" them. i can see three wind parks from where i live. with more to come.

iff birds are smart enough to avoid them, it still changes the ecosystem. those birds leave (or die) because their habitat is destroyed, plain and simple.

green policy doesn't care jack shit for environment in a truly ecological, the science of ecosystems, sense.

it's about selling technical solutions now. while the absolutely best insurance against the effects of any climate change would be robust ecosystems. guess you can't easily buy those of course, so they are unpopular.

> you seem to be fighting studies and evidence with vibes; which I don’t get into.

i indeed i don't have a study well funded by people with things to sell i can point to.

i came to be very careful with regard to "studies" and "experts" in the recent years. the politicians implementing the laws to permit building turbines everywhere are the same who hold shares in wind power companies funding the studies and experts which legitimize the laws. same goes for many other things.

@bonifartius all climate serpents from infinite independent groups are wrong because you’ve thought of some random ideas by looking out your window.

Ok.
