On the topic of alt text:

Being offered a chatGPT solution when the problem is that people need to put in effort, feels like asking for a sandwich and being served a bowl of dry dog food.

Like, yes technically this solves the problem, but I don't want it, and the fact that this is what you're offering and you feel so clever about it, speaks to a profound disrespect for me and my access needs.

@pencilears
you are asking people to work for free and find it disrespectful if they dare use tools to make catering to your wishes less work for them.

@bonifartius@qoto.org @pencilears@mastodon.eternalaugust.com I'm strongly against all the "#AI" bullshit being pushed hard, so my instinctive reaction with anything mentioning "let's just use chatgpt" is to be against it. However, automatically generated text to improve accessibility seems like a very good use-case. Technology should work for us, not the other way around.

I would be against using ChatGPT specifically, since there's very serious copyright and moral issues that go with using it, but a self-hosted free software LLM to handle this stuff would be a good idea in my opinion.

@tyil i just read chatgpt as "AI" because most people use it that way. self hosted AI would be fine for this. probably even wouldn't require very much power. @pencilears

@bonifartius @tyil the accuracy isn't good enough yet, it produces errors that the people it needs to serve are mostly unable to catch.
