@iska i thought rust was so much better than go because it's not GC :)

:hacker_f::hacker_s::hacker_e:

FSE will be down until replacement parts are delivered. Apologies to everyone on FSE. It'll be a few days at least. As noted in the other thread, you can check if FSE is back up or not at http://demo.fedilist.com/instance/freespeechextremist.com , view a stream of the status changes at http://demo.fedilist.com/instance/recent-changes?host=freespeechextremist.com , and if you are lazy, you can point your RSS reader at http://demo.fedilist.com/instance/recent-changes/rss?host=freespeechextremist.com and it will tell you when FSE changes status.

(Glowies not involved, or at least not as far as I know. If @p has federated to wherever you are, you can see that this is the alt mentioned in my bio, so they'd have to get both FSE and SPC. I've got alts all over, though, so if SPC goes down while FSE is down, probably I'll be @p or @p. You can probably tell I'm me, though.)

If you have a VM on that machine, ping me: your VM will be down, too, due to the hardware problem. Apologies.

Situation is a failed PSU on the box. Will be ordering replacements for both PSUs shortly. $150 total, $75 for each PSU, not bad. Machine was a refurb anyway, this kind of thing happens.

This is kinda good news: the weirdness that I was ascribing to "maybe a qemu-kvm bug or a blown cap on the motherboard or something", because even the IPMI wouldn't register anything when the machine locked, and it had to be power-cycled, so it had to be something weird or a hardware problem. Dirty power from a failing PSU would explain it, and it would explain why the thing would just cut out and why sometimes it'd take a couple of power-cycles: some circuit detects overvoltage and pops the entire system.

So, once I've replaced the PSUs, we'll see. I'm optimistic: recall that my previous plan was to stop all the VMs and to declare the box totaled if that didn't fix it and then to figure out a plan after that. This is a small, relatively inexpensive replacement part, and after fans, PSUs are basically the most frequently failed part.

Anyway, very stressful week after a very stressful few months, so it sucks for the site to be down but it's nice to have a little good news. I have work to do so I'll be doing that, and then when I am not doing that, I'll be working on Revolver in between periodic smashing of ^R (F5 for plebs) on the shipment page when there's a tracking number for the replacement parts.

On that topic, remember the bandwidth overage and me spending half a day hacking Revolver into a media reverse-proxy for FSE? Maybe I'll come up with something clever while waiting for the PSU. No telling. I'm a crafty motherfucker.

:dracula: They forgot I'm him. Flipped a whole brick into an empire. They said they needed a stealth soldier so I put my hands onto the hibachi hot-plate at Benihana and burned my fucking fingerprints off. 今日は, you fucking github. :dracula:

@selea fair argument.. if your gonna work 90 hour weeks just make sure your investing in YOUR future and not someone elses.

@Sophistifunk yeah, i'm quite happy! now i have to get a proper pc for it going.. luckily i have some parts. i kind of want a voodoo card though :)

@amszmidt with the plan9 file interfaces one can use any language capabke of file operations to configure things. that's what i meant. can be shell, can be whatever. it's much harder if the format is some serialization format or something homebrewed.

@white_male tbh, i'm happy that i got one this cheap. they tend to be crazy expensive

fuck yeah, scored a 19" crt in very good condition for 5 bucks :kirby_happy:

@amszmidt i'm not sure this has anything to do with unix philosophy. the older tools or plan9 as an extension of unix philosophy are well at lending themselves to being programmtically configured. it's all in the interfaces, and "ini" style (or yaml, json, ...) formats are bad interfaces as they all require much code for parsing and generating.

this doesn't mean that other ideas like the emacs way lisp is wrong, it's just different. imo it gets bad when different concepts are combined or reinvented haphazardly. which unfortunately is often the case.
