@nazgul Aloha from Maui. Sunset over here was nice, too.
@nazgul We're here in Ka‘anapali through April, then back to Indiana to see the kids/grandkids, and probably a couple camping trips.
@nazgul We moved from Bloomington, Indiana to Ka‘anapali in 2014. But then COVID hit, and we couldn't go back to see our kids and grandkids. Our new plan is to winter here, and spend summer/fall on the mainland.
We're not right on the beach, but there's a nice beach just down the hill. And we're high enough we don't have to worry about tsunamis or rising sea levels.
@bwbeach Nice.
We’re looking at doing the six month on/off thing as well. My wife has five young niblings and she doesn’t want to miss holidays and summer with them. And our house in Washington is next door to her mom, so the kids are over all the time.
But if we do it, we’ll likely go for a place significant cheaper. We’re going to start to do trial runs next year to see how we like different places. We’re going to try working remotely from Guanajuato MX in March.
A lot of thjngs to balance in looking. :/ climate change, pandemics, health care, fascism.... I feel super lucky that it’s an option, but not great about it.
@nazgul We picked Indiana as home base for a variety of reasons. The main reason was proximity to family. Two of our three kids are there. And Sharon’s extended family is there.
Indiana is projected to remain habitable by humans for the rest of this century, unlike some hotter places. And it’s expected to be able to grow food. Hawai’i is not even close to being self sufficient on food.
Indiana has better health care than Hawai’i, but is leaning more towards fascism.
Many trade offs, but no ideal solution.
@bwbeach I’m pretty happy with Washington. We’re in a farming valley. The setup of the islands protects us from tsunamis (we’re high bank, and there are hills right behind us if need be). The volcanos could blow, but the mud slides are projected to stop at the channel and row of hills between us and the mainland. The politics definitely have some right wing folks, but it’s a mix of farmers, artists, military, and natives. And the Swinomish tribe has been really good in emergencies. They’re helping us now protect the bank from erosion. They handed out vaccines early. They’ve closed entrance to the reservation in emergencies. Biggest issue would be earthquake, but I think the community would come together well. But boy it’s nuts thinking about all these things.
@bwbeach I was going g to ask where you were.
My wife is still kicking herself that we didn’t try to get a beachfront place in Kaua’i. Mind you, it was 700 square foot shack. But it was on the beach :)
You’d think we’d have enough of the ocean. Our place in La Conner WA is on the shore. As is our family place on Cape Cod (which will doubtlessly be underwater in a couple decades).
