Qualities of Exceptional Speeches:

1. Responsiveness: The speaker responds to the crowd, naturally, and in a way that furthers their message.

2. Writing: The logical construction of the planned portions of the speech. The content.

3. Accent/Tone: The clarity, regional richness, and harmony of word delivery.

4. Authenticity: The sense that the words are not being mechanically read, but delivered as natural dialog.

5. Rhetorical Devices: Symmetry, repetition, humor, etc.

Walz's ability to cut through the bullshit clearly and succinctly is such a joy to behold. The simple statement of "Mind your own business!" feels profound in a political landscape where the right complains about a "nanny state" when what they're trying to create is just a fascist nanny state where the government is all up in everyone's business. The Democrats are the ones who are saying just let everyone be themselves. That's a pretty simple and broadly appealing message, and it's so refreshing to hear a politician just say it directly and unapologetically, not because it polls well, but because it actually reflects his core values.

uspol, walz

“Everything about Walz from the moment he has been nominated is something you absolutely would not buy in a work of fiction. You'd get to the grandfatherly veep candidate stopping his speech to get help for a fainting crowd member, and just fling the book across the room while screaming "fuckin' Sorkin political fantasy bullshit!"

I am loving every moment of this.” – “Kylroy”

I was nuts enough to go both to the JD Vance event in South Philly and then to the Kamala Harris/Tim Walz rally later in the day.

It was like leaving a bitter divorced man meet-up and going straight to a Taylor Swift concert.

Enjoy the contrast!

Why have there been *no* fascist riots in #Scotland so far?

Because we all work very hard to make #NewScots safe.

For the past two years I've been working with others in local government, the third sector, universities, and Scottish government on this : newscots.scot .

We are held up as an example by UNHCR of how to promote welcoming, trauma-informed integration, even while Patel, Braverman, and Jenrick (and the press, and Yaxley-Lennon, and Farage) screamed for blood.

And it works: yes, of course there is #racism in Scotland, but so far we've been able to resist the horrors in England. But it requires a continuous, thoughtful commitment across all layers of society. It isn't a "natural feature" of Scotland. We achieved this.

The report suggests that no level of government in the US has been aggressive enough about reducing how much Americans drive. Especially state DOTs.

I had the opportunity to go to Hiroshima last year and visit the museum. Under no circumstances should we ever let that happen again. I don’t understand how anybody who calls themself a human could do such a thing. bird.makeup/users/antonioguter

Dear white people: when Black people share our experiences with racism, don't ask us

"What can be done about it?"

We didn't invent racism.

And on some level, many of you know what needs to be done. It just sits outside of your comfort level.

Well, you need to learn to sit with that discomfort, then pose your questions about what needs to be done to other white people. You need to challenge racism within:

* YOUR family members who
are racist (The major holidays
are coming. Time to prepare!)

* Your friends and social grops

* Your co-workers and
colleagues

* YOURself

Asking Black people to explain the dynamics of racism and to offer solutions, unless they volunteer that information, is asking for them to "educate you" by doing FREE emotional and intellectual labor - and most of us have enough our plate trying to survive and thrive.

Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

I just realized a good argument against computer ads.

Contrary to regular ads, it is actually using your resources (your power, time on the CPU you bought, etc)

So, shouldn't ad companies paying you money for displaying their ads? Like they pay billboard owners or news paper owners, etc.

So until then, using ad block is just preventing theft.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is investigating Elon Musk's PAC. Not content to influence elections by boosting content or blocking accounts on his terrible site, Musk is also using X to collect data from voters in swing states. His pro-Trump America PAC runs ads that say "Register to Vote" but then don't actually register voters.

It's always a good idea to check your own registration in advance of every election to make sure you are properly registered.

If @willbunch wrote it, you should read it.© & I thread it:

"The story of the most serious White House bribe allegation in U.S. history can't be allowed to fall under the cushions of #JDVance's couch

Congress must probe what really happened with #Trump, #Egypt and the $10M - and make bribery a crime again. My column🎁"

"If “The Lord of the Rings” is a cautionary tale about the desire for power and the use of power, then it is a cautionary tale that was lost on JD Vance."

“Homosexuality was well known in the ancient world, well before Christ was born, and Jesus never said a word about homosexuality. In all of his teachings about multiple things—he never said that gay people should be condemned.”

- Jimmy Carter, 39th President of the United States

We need more leaders--and people of faith--like Jimmy Carter.

@TheWarOnCars As a kid (I am 16), getting around my own can be really hard with all the car-centric infrastructure. Having to bike along highways and stroads is a terrible experience with all the polluted air and constant noise. I mostly rely on trails through the woods to get around my city and often have to go the long way to avoid cars.
