@freemo you haven't had that same experience with the right?
@samlitzinger it was supposed to go here, and I can't seem to delete the other one

@NPR those of us who live and fly in SE Alaska know how crazy Alaska Air landings can sometimes be.
I'd wager that their pilots are some of the best in the world, and the fact that everyone walked off the plane after that landing is a true testament to their skill.
BTW, for comparison, that airport runway is listed as 5, 700' - airports in SE Alaska (where 737s land) are all at least 6000' long, and even they can sometimes be 'very exciting'. (recommended minimum for 737s is ~6000')
It will be interesting to see the final NTSB report - esp any indication of a mechanical problem with the landing gear - we've all experienced pretty hard landings up here - this seems like an outlier for some reason.
Yet another serious telecommunications breakdown amid dangerous #wildfire outbreak in Northwest Territories of Canada this evening. Multiple large communities are evacuating with little means of receiving information...a theme playing out over and over and over again. #NWTfires https://t.co/hthtepRvvO
@statesdj @weatherwest I don't know about receiving weather radio, but with a headphone cord for an antenna, I can receive FM radio broadcasts on my Motorola cellphone, with the Android FM Radio app, and, at least here in Alaska, our radio stations typically rebroadcast important NWS alerts via the EAS system - and those stations typically have greater overall coverage than NWS stations (which are often off the air due to budget created maintenance issues)
https://www.weather.gov/nwr/outages
(maybe there's an app for receiving NWS, or someone can create one)
@Mindfields @weatherwest @ai6yr incidentally, this 'alerting over too wide an area' is also a problem in Alaska for Tsunami alerts.

@freemo I just flashed on what an awesome ringtone that would make!
@freemo interesting thread. My grandfather was a Master Mason and Shriner, and I was in DeMolay briefly - but I can't remember how to do the handshake ;)
If you go that route, the biggest question in my mind is 'what kind of miniature car' would you drive in parades?
Bad news for folks below the Mendenhall Glacier (Juneau, AK) and along the river. Video (on ABC) taken by a neighbor across the river

@samlitzinger
Is that a war crime?
Among their other actions...
Nothing changes much.
Coming up on time to try again.

#TIL the United States Fish & Wildlife Service maintains a searchable, public-access photographic Feather Database.
It's exactly as amazing as you might imagine. You can browse by family or species, and/or identify feathers you find lying about.
In related news, I came across a feather from a Northern Flicker on my lunchtime walk today.
Fresh kelp help - SE Alaska
Found very nice looking kelp at low tide at Outer Point. Took it home & put it in water - thinking I should add salt? - I want to do something with it, but realized I've no earthly idea what I'm doing. Any suggestions - Google foo has failed me so far.
* Further research and comments indicate it might be 'sea lettuce' ?
To be soaked in fresh water for a couple of hours, then spread out to dry in the shade?
Any other options/suggestions?
@GossiTheDog Easy fix for that kind of unwelcome data collection

@stux this seems a bit inflammatory - not sure if this is true in all aircraft maintenance shops, but when I worked a summer on a flight line (helicopters, mostly) the critical nuts were secured with safety wire ties, for just that reason.

@CarrieNash @Scatterseed @Mielke hmm, so I find mastodon way easier to use than threads.
