Sharing my new found crumbs of fediverse knowledge (last one for tonight) - searching using hashtags is very powerful!
Instead of looking for specific 'servers', I instead used the 'magnifying glass' to query on certain hastags (I just guessed on logical possibilities).
e.g.
For regional - #alaska finds a lot
For areas of tech - #broadcast returns a lot, including ones for my specific interest/area of work #broadcastengineering
Pretty powerful stuff!
Also, this seems to be a much safer space, so I've adjusted my profile to include my real name.
Not sure about the best method of verification - haven't done anything with gpg/pgp keys in 20+ years, but perhaps they'll make a comeback? The cool thing about 'key parties' was that you got 'verified' by people you knew and who knew you, and that spread via the whole 'degrees of separation' thing.
I also understand 2FA is possible, so I guess I'll want to figure that out next.
A word of advice from others - since the servers communicate, you don't necessarily have to sign up on one of the busier ones. For instance, I chose one that seems more to align with my interests, but if you search (for instance) for hashtag #TwitterMigration you will be able to see very helpful posts.
