@mdhughes basically, Diaspora was a "second generation" spinoff of the federated social web, initially developed during the days of StatusNet (the federated microblogging platform that became GNU Social).

The platform's protocol is basically like OStatus, which StatusNet used, but was extended for privacy and delivery considerations.

It has developed separately from the OStatus-derived parts of the fediverse, effectively becoming its own bubble network due to protocol evolution. A number of networks can connect with it, such as Friendica, Socialhome, and Hubzilla. The OStatus half now mostly runs ActivityPub, the next-gen protocol successor.

You might not be able to join the joindiaspora pod (their word for "instance") if it is closed for registration, but there are many other public pods that are open which federate with it.

Got bored to use my working laptop without keyboard or mouse. So I used Barrier to transmit my main computer's keyboard and mouse to the laptop.
It act pretty much like another screen with an independant system. I can drag & drop files, c/c stuff and ofc use keyboard and mouse

Jian is also very compact. And has better thumb clusters.
It would cost 70-80$ for wired version and probably 120-140$ for wireless. Sold as set of parts for manual assembly. Crowdfunding campaign should have started already, but COVID ruined all plans.
