Like, I'm sorry Mastodon is the best / least bad Twitter alternative for a lot of people amidst a slew of junk competitors, half of which seem like scams or can't figure out privacy and anti-harassment tools or why people use social media in the first place.
And I'm sorry if you're used to it being a sleepy little gated community where reality and real world problems never intrude.
But tough.
Mastodon, the service, is pretty great, actually. It's bigger than any of us, and it has the tools to create whatever experience you want. Everybody says so!
But this idea that Mastodon and Mastodon users were pure and good while every other social media site, but especially That Place, was full of nothing but clout-chasing sociopaths who need to be driven off with a broom before they bring their bad habits here is extremely pretentious.
It's also really white.
@gwynnion Well, they do have to protect their gated social media communities out in the discourse exurbs, you know. That's where all the good, wholesome accounts live.
@gwynnion LOL, I see you used "gated community" before I did in your first post.
@timberwraith Some hosts and mods on other instances definitely seem to see themselves as the local HOA. I'm glad for Nathan and the community here.
The great thing is that if some buncha people do want to be a gated community in that sense (and who I am to say they shouldn't?), they can band together on some appropriate server(s) and do that!
There are cases where that's annoying / exclusionary / privileged, and there are cases where that's entirely appropriate, I'd say. :)
