I’ve just published “The iPad Works” - some thoughts on recent iPad news and how I view the iPad.
@jasonmcfadden Thanks, Jason! I appreciate it. I’ll read it in a bit.
@coperob Excellent post Rob! I'm loving all the recent Apple and iPad related posts these past few days. Really enjoyable to read personal stories and experiences.
Maybe we need an old fashioned webring for indie Apple bloggers. Would be fun to see more stories like yours and the other recent posts by Jason and Warner.
@dennyhenke Thanks, Denny. I love the idea of a web ring! Some of those “old fashioned” aspects of the web are sorely missed.
@coperob I use my iPad primary because of ergonomic reasons. I can type, if I lie in bed or on the couch, which is hard to manage with an Notebook. Apart from that, there is not much reason for me to use my iPad for work, if I have my Macbook nearby. For me ipadOS is too limited, most of the productive things I want to do are not nearly as effective to handle. #ipadOS #macOS #Ipad #Mac
@ruebig They are certainly great when used just as a tablet. As a bonus, they are so well integrated with the Mac that it’s easy to jump back and forth as needed.
@coperob In ipadOS there are some really low hanging fruits. For example, Tags are essential for organizing some of my files. The files app of ipadOS support Tags, but in the interface it isnt’t possible to search for Tags. Using dozens of Tags, the ipadOS implementation is far from perfect, and fixing this should be addressed by Apple for years. This is only one example, wich makes it cumbersome for me to use my iPad for work. I can walk around this walls, but the direct way is better.
@ruebig I’m not sure when this was added, but in the Files app in iOS 16 you can search for tags, and combine tags with other text. For example, in the search field, start typing the name of a tag and it will appear in a drop down. Tap it to search for that tag. You can others in the same way. You can also add text after the tags to further limit the search.
I hope this helps.
@coperob Thanks, I know this. My problem is the UI for adding Tags. You can do: long press on a file -> Tags. Then you can add a new Tag, or scroll through an endless list to choose an existing one. It isn‘t possible to search in the UI, it isn‘t even possible to change the sorting. #iOS #ipadOS #tags
@ruebig Ah, I misunderstood. Yes, it would be nice if they’d add a way more easily search and find the tag to use!
@coperob Great article. A lot of tech reviewers and pundits get caught up in traditional tropes of how people use compute devices.
As an IT pro working mostly in the Microsoft ecosystem I could feasibly use an iPad for almost everything. I have cloud shell, browser tools, Windows 365, etc… to do my Microsoft workloads.
I’ve even considered getting a 2021 11” iPad Pro & Magic Keyboard to see how far I can go.
Modern computing is flexible. Not rigid.
@rlounsbury Thanks. You’re right that modern computing is flexible. That’s a great way to think about it.
@coperob I appreciate that I can have a tablet with PC processing power that I can use as a tablet or slap it into a magnetic keyboard mount and get a more traditional experience.
@rlounsbury Same here. The versatility can’t be beat, IMO.
@coperob I left a *little* comment on your blog.
