This. This is why I stopped posting over there:

"People don’t come to Twitter for its far-right hate content. Nor do the advertisers come to market to them....The fact of the matter is, people come to Twitter for news, culture, discussions. By staying, you don’t hold any ground, you maintain the viability of a platform hell-bent on promoting far-right ideology. So long as there’s content other than hate, people will have a reason to stay."

i do not understand why a news site would not have an #RSS feed of their latest headlines.

you don't have to give your content away if you don't want to. but you cannot bitch & moan about #facebook or #twitter cannibalizing your readership in their fascist gated communities when you've turned your back on web standards and the open web.

CoffeeGeek is Leaving Twitter.

If you find yourself switching off from all things Russian-invasion related, sure, take a break for your #mentalhealth

But do not forget that #Putin is hoping we will all break. So, remember to look at this map of #Russia, Russian illegally occupied territory, and pro-Russian nations in #Europe.

They're pushing hard on the #Soviet geopolitical expansion and occupation of European nations.

Be wary of propaganda.
Stay alert.

I met these amazing trees last weekend. Thay are small-leaved lime trees, and you don't see many this tall. I reckon these were at least 20 m, but they may have been bigger.

From somewhere around 10,000 BCE till the Late Neolithic, about 1,000 BCE, limes were the dominant species in the ancient wildwood of Southern Britain.

Imagine walking through mile after mile under a high canopy of these majecstic trees. I'd have loved that...

Good grief. In the light of #LaurenceFox's comments on #GBNews, #Sky #News decided to do a piece on the #GenderPayGap. They had a man and woman on to argue about it.

It came out, live on air, that he was being paid and she wasn't. Sky apologised and offered her £75, the standard fee for such an appearance. Then they offered to increase it to £200, the same as they'd paid him.

"🙏🏿Lord please grant me the confidence to deny a brilliant woman professor and researcher tenure track, demote her, push her out of my school, to be the adversity that she had to overcome in life... and when she overcomes me and wins the Nobel prize, to roll in like I did something. Amen!"

U Penn is bold! Real talk, I couldn't do that. I couldn't even fake that till I make that. Levels.

Let's be clear about this. Not removing most hate speech and disinformation/misinformation are key aspects of Musk's #Twitter/X and his publicly stated philosophies, which also include his direct friendly public interactions with racists and fascists on the platform. Twitter is the main large platform that has refused to agree to the EU code of conduct and has now been told by the EU that it will be in violation of EU laws regarding these content types, unless changes are made.

Understandably, many firms are reluctant to advertise on Twitter for fear of brand contamination through general or specific association with disreputable Twitter content.

By making it possible for #Google Ad users to buy ads on Twitter by linking the Google and Twitter ad systems, Google is now explicitly aligning itself with Musk's philosophies and sensibilities, by providing new sources of income via Google systems to increase ad buys on Twitter, and so help continue to fund Musk's hate speech and disinformation operations.

The damage to Google's reputation -- whatever is left of it at this point -- could be enormous, especially when Google Ad users find their ads associated with the more horrific of Twitter posts.

The is a dark day indeed for Google. -L

A few days ago I read the exciting news that Dimethyl Sulphide (DMS) had probably been discovered in the atmosphere of a #planet in a different solar system bbc.co.uk/news/science-environ. This is pretty exciting because on earth DMS is uniquely associated with #life. Hunting for life on another planet by finding DMS would be cool, and reminded me that Storm Petrels use DMS to search for life on the high seas. 1/4

This is what you accept when you object to 20mph speed limits. This is what you shrug and say "yeah, that's fine, happy to accept this rate of death" over.

You can buy my cartoons from worldofmoose.com. I draw each one to order and we send them out mounted so you just need to buy a standard frame. I know Christmas seems a long way away… so get ahead of the rush now!

thinking about becoming the guard who always lies for a bit, if my colleague is okay with switching. how to ask though... 🤔

I really can't be doing with "This person did this amazing thing... what's YOUR excuse?" posts

Not sure who needs to hear this, but you don't NEED 'an excuse'

It isn't wrong to not be hugely successful

Choosing not to sacrifice all your time and energy for things other people think of as life goals is not a failing

You're not at fault for functioning within the limits of your situation

And no amount of judgemental bullying disguised as 'inspiration' will change that.

I’ve signed an agreement to write a book about ActivityPub for O’Reilly Media. ActivityPub is the protocol for connecting social networks across the Web; it’s what currently underpins Mastodon and will be used by Threads.net. The book should be available sometime after summer 2024.

The book will be a developer guide that will help programmers connect existing software to the social web, as well as making brand new social applications. Currently, developers depend on reading the specifications themselves, forum posts, wiki pages, blog posts, and other content spread across the Web. I hope that a single book with practical step-by-step information will make learning about and building with ActivityPub easier.

O’Reilly is the best programming book publisher, hands down. I have a dozen O’Reilly titles on my shelf, all with the famous engraved animal covers, and I use them regularly. I appreciate that the O’Reilly team sees the potential for an ActivityPub book. I have had a great experience with the editors so far.

I’ll update my progress here. I have a pretty tight schedule, but I’ve rearranged some of my commitments like graduate school to accommodate the work. (I’ll be getting credits from Georgia Tech towards my CS degree for doing this book — a nice bonus!) This is the first book I’ve written, and it’s going to require working code for examples, so there will be a lot of learning and work to do. But I’m confident this will be a step forward.
