I think that's part of the problem as far as fidelity goes--these things were trained upon materials produced by a species with a thing for confabulation and prevarication. The experience is a bit like hearing yourself on a voicemail and saying "I don't sound like that" and then realizing that your voice does sound like that, to others.
@cyrilpedia there's a lot of hype about artificial intelligence generating text, but not nearly enough about natural mediocrity.
