Centipedes don’t have eyes or photoreceptors, but these insects can still detect sunlight with heat receptors, according to a study in which researchers used thermal imaging and also experimentally blocked thermal receptors on the insects’ antennae with tin foil. "It is often assumed that generic drugs are affordable and widely available to those who need them. But this is not entirely true. For example, even after patent expiries open the door to generic rivals, low levels of competition between companies in smaller markets means that generics can actually be more expensive in poor countries than in wealthy ones."

'Marty once said of Dave, “I was lucky to get him. We taught him how to grow Tetrahymena, and he taught us a lot about how to do science.”'
'I remember, many years ago, sitting mystified through a seminar where the leading lights of English philosophy gathered in Oxford to discuss John Rawls’s newly published Theory of Justice. There was radical disagreement as to what Rawls meant to say. The answer seemed to me (a young Skinnerian) obvious: why not phone him up and ask him?'

“Map 10 The Turbulence Chart (Lviv, Ukraine, circa 1890)
This engraving was part of a set that illustrated the fabled, never published, “Order & Disorder” manuscript by Bronislaw Zamoyski (sometimes referred to as the “Leibniz of Lviv”). The text and all accompanying illustrations were thought to have been lost when the Russian Army captured Lviv in 1914. How it was obtained by von Willebrand remains unknown.”

"Recognizing that more is better is now an invalid assumption,1 the 2023 US Senate appropriations bill for FDA (included in S. 4661) and its report language encourage FDA to organize dose optimization clinical trials of marketed anticancer agents in an effort to reduce waste and/or toxicities of treatment without compromising efficacy."
