"We Americans tend to think that freedom is a matter of things being cleared away, and that capitalism does that work for us. It is a trap to believe in this,” he writes. “Freedom is not an absence but a presence, a life in which we choose multiple commitments and realize combinations of them in the world.”

'Capitalism’s radical critics (Vladimir Lenin) and radical supporters (Friedrich Hayek) agreed that monopoly meant oppression. Markets are supposed to enable competition, spread information, and separate economics from politics. But what would happen when giant Soviet enterprises came into private hands?'

Hidden in a piece for the FT, it seems for Jeremy Hunt the penny has finally dropped about how the Tories crashed & burned in the last election, he notes in his piece warning Reeves not to sacrifice growth (rich from a man whose party oversaw years of economic stagnation), that:
'what matters to ordinary families is good jobs & rising living standards'.
And what did the Tories deliver: rubbish precarious jobs & falling living standards.
Looks like he did get the message.
'To elucidate the in vivo function of neoself-antigens presented on MHC-II by decreased Ii expression, we analyzed the antigen specificity of clonally expanded autoreactive T cells in SLE patients as well as in drug-inducible Ii knockout (Ii-iKO) mice, which allowed us to delete the Ii from adult mice. We demonstrate that neoself-antigens presented on MHC-II upon decreases in Ii expression levels are recognized by CD4+ T cells as non-self-antigens and are the primary targets for autoreactive T cells clonally expanded in SLE patients. Furthermore, we suggested that EBV reactivation, which downregulates Ii expression, could be involved in the activation of neoself-reactive T cells.'

"A small, cloistered elite of not-especially-bright billionaires have decided that they are very, very special, and that the problem with society these days is that people keep treating them like everyone else. "

"Here, through in vivo and ex vivo isotopic tracing, we examined the contributions of different nutrients to neutrophil metabolism under specific conditions. Human peripheral blood neutrophils, in contrast to a neutrophil-like cell line, rely on glycogen storage as a major metabolic source under resting state but rapidly switch to primarily using extracellular glucose upon activation with various stimuli."

The Brazilian military has been involved in a series of controversial episodes that have undermined emergency efforts to tackle the humanitarian crisis in the Yanomami Indigenous Territory.
Reports show it failed (or sabotaged) airspace control and food deliveries to the Indigenous people, who suffer from malnutrition as a result of mercury contamination from illegal mining.
