"Suella Braverman’s latest assertionthat multiculturalism has “failed” proved that when it comes to immigration, we have moved away from dog whistles and back towards the sort of Powellite language that, even decades ago, was considered beyond the pale."

Not good. My olive harvest this year will be zero. I mean nothing. Not one olive on the trees. I presume it was down to the extremely hot, extremely long summer. Our fears are that this will be the new normal - science says our fears are justified.

Climate change is hitting our food production. Today.

I expect olive oil to hit €20 per litre in 🇪🇸. 2 years ago it was €4.

"Back at the turn of the 21st century, valley fever was an obscure fungal disease in the United States, with fewer than 3,000 reported cases a year, mostly in California and Arizona. Two decades later, cases of valley fever have exploded, increasing roughly sevenfold by 2019."

An evening well spent, IMO

"I actually don’t watch a ton of blockbusters, but in the early pandemic, I got extremely bored, drank half a bottle of wine, and rewatched Speed on a cold night."

The Netherlands halted extraction from Europe's biggest gas field on Sunday, which was resulting in earthquakes that have shaken local residents for decades and threaten to persist.

Although gas extraction from the field has been almost cut to zero over the last few years, the government kept the site operational due to the global energy uncertainties prompted largely by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The journal Nature published a study of the most 100 most cited scientific papers that provides food for thought to the working stiffs (I used to be one). First of all, I find it quite natural for any researcher to keep an eye on how often his or her work is cited.

We privatised the water companies into an artificial market. We failed to regulate or control that artificial market. So instead of investing in infrastructure, the private companies sold out to foreign investors, who borrowed debt to give to execs and shareholders. And now they want the customers to pay for the infrastructure upgrades. To deal with the water shortages and sewage spills.

It's a long con.

"Defining that threat is not simple. The challenge is to do for infectious diseases what other researchers can now do for droughts or hurricanes: “attribute” events to climate change. “The very cutting edge right now is actually trying to start doing attribution … to say, for each degree of temperature change, how many more cases do we get?” says Erin Mordecai, an infectious disease ecologist at Stanford University."
