'There is no doubting the centrality today of Mendel’s ideas in evolutionary biology. The current theory’s foundation, the modern synthesis, depends arguably as much on Mendel as it does on Darwin. The 200th anniversary of Mendel’s birth is thus an appropriate moment for both reevaluating and celebrating his legacy in evolutionary biology.'
Job: Theoretical eco-evo postdoc in Mainz (Germany)
I realize I posted this one back then on a site that wasn't owned by Musk yet; never here so far. Also, the deadline is conveniently a week away (4th Dec to be precise) so a reminder is in place anyway!
My lab is moving to the University of #Mainz. If you're into #LifeHistory #theory/#modelling and would like to interact with whoever visits the future "theory hub" of the #Kokkonuts, read this ad!

In Science Signaling, Ye, Olsen, Wandall, and colleagues used a 3D human organotypic skin model to investigate signaling by the protein TGF-beta. Although TGF-beta initially suppresses tumor growth, at later stages, it promotes metastasis. With this approach, the researchers identified a TGF-beta signaling pathway that promoted invasive growth. This same setup can be used by others to study TGF-beta signaling under normal and pathological conditions: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/scisignal.abo2206 #science #cancer

For those that joined #Mastodon and grabbed the first server they could find, but would prefer to #migrate to a different one, I created a short guide on how to do this quickly and easily.
It also allows you to easily move any followers across to your new profile and leaves a redirection on your old profile for those that find it to help them get to your new one. 😁👍
I'd love if you could share it among your networks to help those that will invariably need it later on.

"A higher aneuploidy score is associated with poor prognosis following immunotherapy among tumors with low TMB, but not those with high TMB."

'Interestingly, combined treatments including phages and a wide range of antibiotics lead to an increased bacterial killing, a phenomenon called phage-antibiotic synergy (PAS), suggesting that antibiotic-induced changes in bacterial physiology alter the dynamics of phage propagation. Using single-phage and single-cell techniques, each step of the lytic cycle of phage HK620 was studied in E. coli cultures treated with either ciprofloxacin or cephalexin, two filamentation-inducing antibiotics.'

I always wondered how Bell Labs, a private lab, could be so successful and win 9 (!) Nobel Prizes. The answer seems to be a continuous stream of funding and an environment that valued longterm research goals and scientific discovery over progress reports.
I am a second-year PhD student at Cambridge Uni in mathematical #epidemiology. In particular, I am interested in #virus #evolution during #epidemics
I also did my undergrad and my master's in applied #maths and theoretical physics at Cambridge, but I'm from Madrid.
Do you use a lot of #genomic data in your research or are you considering getting a direct-to-consumer #WholeGenomeSequencing kit for the holidays? Here's a really great review from #NatureReviewsGenetics that covers the technological and legal protections for genomic data: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41576-022-00455-y #science #medicine #genetics #privacy #genome #WGS
In 1952 Rosalind Franklin & Raymond Gosling collected their famous diffraction pattern of #DNA, photo 51.
But did you know that Elwyn Beighton, in #Leeds produced a strikingly similar image the year before? For some reason his boss, Bill Astbury wasn't interested & so they never published the work.

The Moore's Law scrolls:
'In 2005, realizing they lacked an original copy of “Cramming,” Intel executives offered $10,000 on eBay for a mint copy of the relevant issue of Electronics. At last, an engineer in Surrey, UK, found one under his floorboards. The enchanted pages now sit in climate-controlled splendor in Intel’s museum—the tech world’s Book of Kells.'
I've worked on all of science, from B cells to T cells.
