"Here we analyze data from 828 children in Kilifi, Kenya with severe, uncomplicated, and asymptomatic malaria infection over 18 years of falling malaria transmission. We examine markers of host immunity and metabolism, and markers of parasite growth and transmission investment. We find that inflammatory responses and reduced plasma lysophosphatidylcholine levels are associated with markers of increased investment in parasite sexual reproduction (i.e., transmission investment) and reduced growth (i.e., asexual replication)."

Wrapping up an Intro course with one of my favorite topics: Consciousness (C)!

I really like how @anilkseth parses the conceptual space of C in this essay (a precursor to his recent book, Being You):

There's:
C level (awake vs coma);
C content (awareness);
C self (that little person in our heads who is driving it all; free will).

On the topic of free will & the brain, do you know of references appropriate for early undergrads? (No Penrose please).

Lovely post by Darren Dahly on not being a 'real' statistician, but the importance of 'applied' statisticians, and why we need more of them: statsepi.substack.com/p/im-not. As a 20% statistician myself, I could not agree more!

Mondrian Crescent

I love it when train doors align at the end of a tunnel. The red tiles at Green Park station make this the ideal location to capture this moment.

It wasn't luck though, instead I froze the moving train with a fast shutter. It took ages to get it centred.

This final image resembles an abstract art painting by Piet Mondrian.

"When Zhengzhou started registering Covid-19 infections in mid-October, Foxconn put its plant under “closed loop” management, barring staff from leaving the site. But as infections started spreading inside the factory town, many workers fled the campus."

"Nothing has set back China’s preparations as extensively as its difficulty in vaccinating older people. Two-thirds of people ages 80 and older are vaccinated, but only 40 percent have received a booster dose, a critical shortcoming because Chinese-made vaccines offer weaker protection than the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines."

"In 2006 the American Library Association issued a button to its members. It read, “radical, militant librarian.” We should have taken the message at its word. The American library, until recently a refuge of neutral quietude, has become a booming battleground in the culture wars."

How big is the #compchem community around here? Prof Núria López at ICIQ is looking for #postdocs in sunny Tarragona. The group is really great, and the salary is quite competitive. More info: iciq.org/jobs-grants/position/

Also, if you're curious about the research life and the chemistry community in Tarragona, I wrote about it a bit ago: chemistryworld.com/careers/fan

Meanwhile at the other place:

"Twitter has proved a cherished forum for climate scientists to share research, as well as for activists seeking to rally action to halt oil pipelines or decry politicians’ failure to cut pollution. But many are now fleeing Twitter due to a surge in climate misinformation, spam and even threats that have upended their relationship with the platform."

This is just appalling. Another facet of being malnourished, starving and sleep deprived is that it massively impacts immune function and can cause immunodeficiency- givenwe are a in a tripledemic of RSV, flu and covid- this will not help these children either. Awful news. theguardian.com/education/2022
