#Advent Day13: #Drosophila immigrans—our last fly in the immigrans-tripunctata radiation—is a very common global human commensal from the far east doi.org/10.2108/zsj.24.913 . It was only described after it reached the US in ~1900 columbia.edu/cu/lweb/digital/c , and appears to have been rare in the UK in the 1950s drosophila.jp/jdd/class/030701 link.springer.com/article/10.1 . Dimm likes a malty medium and nearly made it as a model jstor.org/stable/2405408 , but now rarely appears in lab studies onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

The Curse

"Profound advances in protein structure prediction, and our own recent work on exploring protein fold space, both of which use deep learning methods, got us thinking about something one of us (PEB) has taught for a long time—the curse of the ribbon. Do some reductionist models and/or scientific representations, such as the ribbon diagram illustrating protein structure, facilitate research, only to eventually hinder further insight?"

I’m functionally off Twitter as of today. Account needs to stay up for the time being, but I won’t tweet anymore.

So, fediverse: What’s a good source for news services? Are they on Insta these days? Do I need to go back to individual apps?

#introduction time: I'm a cognitive neuroscientist, mum and associate prof who is passionate about research! I investigate #emotion, #motivation and #decision making in the #brain using #neuroimaging, #computational models and a new #neurostim technique that uses transcranial #ultrasound. I started the Modes (=Motivation, Decision making and neuroStimulation) group this year. We are located at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging at #Oxford (group website coming soon!)

The harassment of public health officials and simultaneous mocking of transgender individuals from Mu$k was it for me. I will no longer be using Twitter. So figured I'd do a proper #introduction here!

I'm a PhD candidate at the #UniversityofWashington Seattle's MCB program. I study host-microbe interactions in the intestines in Ollie Harrison's lab who is at the Benaroya Research Institute.

I enjoy all manner of outdoor pursuits outside the lab and love to create by baking and crafting.

I’m chairing a really incredible panel on Wednesday on #COVID19 #vaccine #boosters and I invite everyone to join us! Our speakers include Gabriel Victora, Nadine Rouphael and Westyn Branch-Elliman. I’ve seen teasers of these talks and they are amazing, a great balance of immunology, trials and effectiveness data.

In the context of a new paper (just accepted today at eLife, YAY!) we opted to include all the source data in the paper and we are uploading all the image data and intermediate data analyses onto Zenodo (the data repository at CERN).

Contemporaneously, I have been getting a number of emails about a new NIH data sharing initiative/mandate.

Hi everyone! Here's my #introduction. I'm a PhD student working on fungal #genetics in the USA. I never found a lot of fungal geneticists at that ~other place~ (my PI doesn't use it, for instance) but I hope to have better luck here. I study regulation of nitrogen metabolism and would love to talk shop. #fungi

Figured it’s finally time to do an #introduction. I am an #assistantprofessor at UC Santa Cruz. My lab studies interactions between #circadianRhythms and #infectiousDisease.
I study #streptococcus #pneumoniae #pneumonia #microbiology #immunology #innateimmunity using #mouse and #zebrafish models.
We know that #immunity to #pathogens changes throughout the day- my lab is trying to figure out how! #srbr #ZebrafishRock #metx

Brilliant Sidney Pestka keynote lecture by Chris Hunter @KingOfPathogens notonmastodon at the Philadelphia Infection and Immunity Forum - fascinating new insights into toxoplasma latency and interplay of replication dynamics of latent cyst/replicative stages with host immune response.

Noticed a few new faces on Mastodon. Can't imagine why 🐦
A couple tips getting started:

- To actually boost someone's post so others see it, you have to do the "boost" icon 🔁 . If you just favourite it, it only tells the author you liked it (but doesn't feed into any sort of algorithm).
- Your instance/server matters a bit, but connectivity improves the more follows/followers you have. Growing pains are over quickly.
- Do an intro post and spam #keywords . Others will boost to help you out! 😀

Hello #ScienceMastodon,

I am a Group Leader at IGC Portugal, and also an Honorary Professor at UCL UK

In the lab, we like to call ourselves Optical Cell Biologists. We develop #Microscopy technology to study cells and their viral infection at the nanoscale. To do so, we deploy novel #SuperResolution and #MachineLearning methods

We hold an ethos for making our methods easily available, reproducible and open to anyone.

Post often about the lab, research we find cool and myself

The #measles outbreak in and round Columbus, Ohio continues to grow. There have now been 73 cases in children under the age of 17; 26 of these kids were hospitalized at a point. 56 of these kids were old enough to have had at least 1 dose of vaccine; only 4 did. public.tableau.com/app/profile
