You don't have to use Mastodon through an app!

Every server has its own website where you can log in and use all its features. The web interface is excellent, and it usually gets the latest features before the apps do.

Your server's website address will usually be the same as its name, for example the website for the server kind.social is at kind.social

The website works on both computers and phones. (If you're using the phone version, click # to see the search box.)

Yet another study showing that tumor mutation burden is a poor predictor of response to checkpoint blockade.

"First we assembled the largest pan-cancer dataset of immunotherapy patients with sequencing and clinical data. Surprisingly, we find little evidence that TMB is predictive of response to ICB.
(...)
Our analysis shows that the use of TMB in clinical practice is not supported by available data and can deprive patients of treatment to which they are likely to respond."

“It’s stunning,” says the immunologist Barney Graham, the former deputy director of the Vaccine Research Center and a central figure in the development of mRNA vaccines, who has lately been writing about a “new era for vaccinology.” “You cannot imagine what you’re going to see over the next 30 years. The pace of advancement is in an exponential phase right now.”

“Equity in science is not a political issue; it’s good science.” The authors caution that in order to move equity to the center of scientific research, “we must first recognize and acknowledge whom our scientific and institutional processes harm and how,” noting that acknowledging this harm “is the first step” towards positive change.'

My opinion is that the original paper is flawed and should be retracted, but now @eLife readers can hear from both sides and decide for themselves.

'Provision of Signal 2 from DCs to naïve T cells during priming is the second critical step [30], which usually takes the form of DC-expressed CD80 and CD86 interacting with CD28 on T cells. Consistent with this, Cd80−/−Cd86−/− mice have impaired CD8+ T cell responses after Ad5 immunization, but for reasons that remain to be elucidated Cd28−/− mice have a different phenotype: delayed but not fully impaired CD8+ T cell responses'

Copying Donatello (no, not the turtle).

"Starting with a pencil sketch before working with a series of ever-finer tools to ‘nibble away’ at the stone, Smith offers an immensely satisfying glimpse into how one of history’s great sculptors created dazzling, emotive scenes from just stone, shadow and light."
