Hello there! I am a virologist, mainly studying respiratory viruses these days and innate immunity. I lead a research team at the IRIM, a CNRS/Montpellier university co-funded institute based in south of France and dedicated to studying infectious diseases. Used to love all the scientific exchanges on Twitter, hope to find this here too!

We have an opportunity for an outstanding scientist to establish their research group at the Perutz. The successful candidate will be offered an #assistantprofessor position at the Medical University of Vienna. Read more: tinyurl.com/4hjm863y #sciencjobs #facultyjobs #academicjobs

What a mess:

'The inquiry team has now reported on the consultation about its terms of reference. Those analysing the responses found that 15% of submissions were “campaigns and duplicates.” This raises the question of what a campaign is. When different groups submit versions of the same text, the connection is obvious. But other links are less obvious: for example, the BBC reports that UsForThem, which has attracted high level support from politicians in its campaign against restrictions in schools, has links with the Health Advisory and Recovery Team (HART), which in turn has worked on a campaign against children being vaccinated against covid-19.8910 HART, meanwhile, shares members with groups that have opposed vaccination, such as the UK Medical Freedom Alliance and the Children’s Health Defence.'

The recent reporting on #jail deaths in the US reminds me of an overlooked finding from our work in Brazil - that mortality rates were over twice as high in #police detention (akin to US jails) compared to #prisons, and most of the disparity was driven by astronomical rates of death from violence and suicide. As in US jails, most people in police detention in Brazil are legally innocent, awaiting trial. Yet for many it becomes a death sentence.
